Run a structured qualitative discussion using a pre-built objective, then interpret the findings through traceable visual and timeline-based report modules.

What Is a Standard Focus Group?

Standard Focus Group is the most structured format within the Focus Groups study family. It is designed for questions that fit one of five common qualitative objectives: User Needs & Preferences, Market Fit & Competitive Analysis, Usage Patterns, Customer Satisfaction & Loyalty, or Brand Perception & Awareness.

The format uses 4 to 8 full AI Twins and typically runs for 15 to 20 minutes. Selecting an objective loads a curated discussion guide that can be edited before launch. The report converts the discussion into Quote Cards, citation traces, categorical views, timeline views, and full transcripts.

Choose Standard when the question maps cleanly to a template and the team needs a visual, stakeholder-ready report rather than only a narrative conclusion.

Who Needs a Standard Focus Group?

Standard Focus Groups are useful for researchers, brand teams, product strategists, and insight teams investigating a well-defined category, customer, usage, loyalty, or perception question.

The format is especially useful when the research audience expects familiar qualitative outputs such as an Affinity Diagram, Empathy Map, SWOT analysis, Customer Journey Map, or Day in the Life view.

Why Standard Focus Groups Matter

Traditional qualitative work often separates fieldwork, transcript review, coding, synthesis, and visualization. Standard Focus Group compresses those stages into one study. The platform generates the visual analysis modules directly from the discussion and preserves citation traces back to the original responses.

Teams can move quickly through the headline findings while still inspecting the evidence behind any claim when a stakeholder asks how the conclusion was reached.

How the AI Twins Work

Each participant is a full AI Twin. The format supports 4 to 8 participants so the report can capture shared language and meaningful differences across the cohort.

Cohort composition affects every downstream view. Select participants with relevant shared needs and enough contextual difference to reveal which findings are broadly shared and which depend on a particular use case.

AI Driven routes questions and follow-ups adaptively. Exhaustive asks every loaded question to every participant and takes longer by design. Use AI Driven for most studies and Exhaustive when complete question-by-participant coverage is required.

What a Standard Focus Group Produces

The report is organized as a stack of connected modules. Quote Cards surface useful direct responses. Trace Results links those quotes back to the original question and response. Categorical Views organize the discussion through a Word Cloud, Affinity Diagram, Empathy Map, and SWOT analysis. Timeline Views reconstruct the Customer Journey, a Day in the Life, and, when the responses support it, a Story Board. Each module can be exported, and the full transcript remains available.

Walkthrough of How to Interpret a Standard Focus Group Report

Read the report as a sequence that moves from evidence to synthesis and then to context. Start with the direct quotes, verify the traces, compare the categorical views, and finish with the timelines.

When several modules point to the same issue, the finding becomes more defensible. When they disagree, return to the traces and determine whether the difference comes from audience context, question wording, or overgeneralization.

What a Standard Focus Group Will Not Tell You

Standard Focus Group does not estimate what share of the broader market holds a view. Use Quant research when the next question is how common a finding is.

The five templates also do not cover every research question. Use a Custom Focus Group when the objective requires a specialized role, a niche hypothesis, or a structure that does not fit the available templates.

How Standard Differs from Other Focus Group Formats

Standard vs Custom

Standard begins with a pre-built objective and question set. Custom begins with a user-defined objective and a more flexible discussion design. Standard produces the full visualization stack, while Custom is better suited to questions that require a specialized lens or structure.

Standard vs Quick

Quick Focus Group is designed for a narrow directional answer and a short turnaround. Standard uses more participants, runs longer, and produces a layered report. Choose Quick for a focused brief decision and Standard when the deliverable requires visual analysis and traceability.

Limitations

Template fit matters. Heavy question editing may indicate that Custom is the better format.

The output can be extensive.Select only the modules that support the final decision.

Exhaustive mode takes longerbecause it asks every question to every participant.

How to Run a Standard Focus Group

Before starting, define the research question clearly enough to identify the closest objective template. Decide whether adaptive discussion or complete question coverage matters more, and select a cohort that represents the audience the team needs to understand.

Walkthrough of How to Create a Standard Focus Group

Step 1: Open Standard Focus Group

From the dashboard, open Calendar → New Event → New Research Study. Select Qual** →**Focus Groups. Standard appears as the leftmost study type and lists pre-built templates, 4 to 8 AI Twins, a 15 to 20 minute runtime, and outputs including a key findings summary, customized visualizations, and full transcripts.

Click Start Study under Standard.

Step 2: Select an Objective

The Objective & Questions screen initially shows an empty question panel. Choose an Objective Type to load the corresponding discussion guide.

The five templates are User Needs & Preferences, Market Fit & Competitive Analysis, Usage Patterns, Customer Satisfaction & Loyalty, and Brand Perception & Awareness.

Step 3: Review the Questions and Meeting Style

After selecting an objective, the platform loads approximately ten questions tailored to that research shape. Edit unclear wording, remove questions that do not support the brief, and add any missing decision-critical prompt.

Choose AI Driven for adaptive routing and follow-ups. Choose Exhaustive when every participant must answer every loaded question. Click Select Twins.

Step 4: Select the AI Twins

The Participants screen displays recommended AI Twins matched to the objective. Use the search field to add more participants. Standard supports 4 to 8 AI Twins per run.

Select a cohort with relevant shared needs and enough contextual difference to surface useful contrast. Click Create Plan.

Step 5: Review and Launch

The Review & Launch screen summarizes the selected participants, objective, questions, and meeting style. Confirm that the participant profiles match the intended audience and that every question supports the objective.

Choose Conduct Meeting Once for a one-time study. Choose Start Meeting and Schedule for recurring research.

Step 6: Read the Quote Cards

The first report module presents the most useful direct responses as Quote Cards. Use them to identify the central need, principal friction, and desired outcome.

In this example, the three surfaced quotes form a complete decision frame. The first identifies the basic functional need: avoiding physical discomfort during long, demanding days. The second shows the product gap: materials that perform well can still feel too casual in professional settings. The third expresses the desired resolution: a product that provides reliable support without forcing the user to compromise on appearance. Read together, the quotes point to a clear opportunity to preserve trusted function while improving professional versatility.

Step 7: Inspect the Citation Trace

Select See Trace to view the question, verbatim response, and explanation connecting the quote to the report claim.

The trace confirms that the functional need was not inferred from a vague summary. It comes directly from the participant's description of extended workdays and the desire to avoid foot pain. This distinction matters because it shows that comfort is not an abstract preference in this use case. It is tied to endurance, concentration, and the ability to complete a demanding routine.

Select Drill Down when you need the full answer. Citation markers identify which response fragments support claims elsewhere in the report.

The expanded response adds the context that the short quote cannot carry on its own. The participant describes a day built around long indoor walking, public transit, work responsibilities, and family life. Those details explain why reliability, comfort, and versatility appear repeatedly across the report. The citation markers also show how one full response can support several later outputs without changing the original meaning.

Step 8: Explore the Categorical Views

Use the Word Cloud to identify dominant vocabulary, then select a word to inspect the quotes that produced it.

The largest terms center on comfort, support, cushioning, stability, and professional appearance. This indicates that the audience's mental model begins with physical performance, then moves to whether the product can fit more polished settings. Smaller material terms, such as leather, suede, mesh, and matte finishes, are not separate concerns. They are the proposed mechanisms for closing the gap between function and appearance.

Selecting a term such as support reveals the statement that gave it weight. The supporting response links support to cushioning and stability during long work periods, while also making clear that price or service cannot compensate for poor physical performance. This helps the team understand that support is a purchase threshold, not simply a positive feature.

Use the Affinity Diagram to review clusters of related needs, priorities, and frustrations.

The clusters show how the research problem breaks into five connected areas: physical comfort, professional appearance, durability and maintenance, safety and performance, and daily priorities. The structure prevents the team from treating every comment as a separate request. Instead, it shows that the concept must solve a system of needs, with function as the foundation and professional versatility as the unresolved layer.

The supporting response under the comfort cluster establishes a clear hierarchy. Cushioning and fit come first, followed by traction and durability, with style considered only after those requirements are met. This does not mean appearance is unimportant. It means any aesthetic improvement must be introduced without weakening the functional qualities that already drive trust.

Use the Empathy Map to separate stated requirements from underlying thoughts and emotions.

The Empathy Map separates the visible request from the reasoning underneath it. Participants say they need dependable cushioning, traction, and more polished materials. They think in a function-first way and notice a gap between reliable performance and professional suitability. They feel fatigue, vulnerability, and a need for security during demanding routines. Together, these layers suggest that the strongest proposition is not fashion-led. It is confidence and relief delivered through a product that works across contexts.

Use the SWOT view to translate the discussion into strategic strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

The SWOT translates the same evidence into a strategic view. Technical reliability and established trust appear as strengths. The professional-aesthetic gap and material-maintenance concerns appear as weaknesses. More refined, weather-resistant materials create an opportunity, while competitors already combining comfort and professional styling create the threat. The key implication is to evolve the product without weakening the performance equity that makes the audience loyal.

The expanded strength narratives explain why these advantages are difficult to replace. Cushioning, stability, traction, and fit are connected to real high-mileage environments rather than generic product satisfaction. This creates a meaningful switching cost. The audience treats the product as a dependable daily tool, so future improvements should build on that relationship instead of presenting an unfamiliar alternative.

Step 9: Explore the Timeline Views

The Customer Journey Map organizes the experience across Awareness, Consideration, Usage, and Retention. Each stage contains touchpoints, influences, and reactions.

The initial journey view shows the moments that organize the relationship: demanding workdays and commutes, evaluation of technical features, everyday use in mixed settings, and the possibility of deeper retention. These touchpoints give the team a framework for asking where the current experience is already strong and where the next product or message must do more.

The completed journey shows a progression from physical need to trusted performance and then to a remaining versatility gap. Awareness begins with discomfort and safety concerns. Consideration is won through cushioning, stability, traction, and fit. Usage confirms long-term reliability but exposes the conflict between casual materials and professional settings. Retention becomes stronger when the same dependable product also feels polished and easy to maintain. The opportunity therefore sits later in the journey, not at initial awareness.

A Day in the Life places needs and frictions inside a typical routine. Use it to identify the moments when the problem becomes most visible or consequential.

The daily timeline makes the gap tangible. Comfort and traction matter during the commute and long periods on foot. The need for a more polished appearance becomes most visible during professional meetings, while cushioning and stability regain importance during the evening commute. The same product is being judged against different requirements across one day. This supports a versatility-led direction because the user does not want several specialized products. They want one dependable option that moves across those moments.

Open Story Board when the discussion contains a clear narrative sequence. When no storyboard is found, rely on the Customer Journey and Day in the Life views.
