II. QUALITATIVE RESEARCHC. Innovation Research

C. Innovation Research

Develop, refine, and pressure-test new ideas with consumer-grounded input before committing budget or taking them to market.

What Is Innovation Research?

Innovation Research is one of four study families within consumr.ai's Qual offering, alongside Focus Groups, Creative & Content, and Investigative Interviews. To access it, go to Qual → Innovation Research.

Unlike studies that evaluate an existing product, campaign, or asset, Innovation Research is designed for work that is still being shaped. Its outputs help teams generate ideas, develop a seed concept, or evaluate a strategic direction before the final artifact exists.

Who Needs Innovation Research?

Innovation Research is designed for product strategists, brand teams, R&D leads, and innovation directors who need audience input on something that has not yet been built. This may include a new product concept, a positioning shift, an entry into a new category, or a strategic move whose risks are too costly to discover only after launch.

It is most useful in the period between having an idea and committing resources to it. The goal is to involve the audience early enough for their needs, language, and concerns to influence what gets created.

The Three Innovation Research Formats

Innovation Research includes three formats. Each one supports a different stage of upstream decision-making.

Brainstorming Sessions

Brainstorming Sessions are designed for structured ideation. They are useful when the team needs to generate new ideas, expand an existing product seed, diagnose a problem, or move beyond the first obvious solutions.

The format runs with 2-5 AI Twins over approximately 10-15 minutes and uses established ideation frameworks to guide the discussion. The output may include idea clusters, a feasibility assessment, prioritized concepts, and a conclusion that synthesizes the strongest direction.

Brainstorming Frameworks:

Six Thinking Hats separates the discussion into six cognitive lenses: objective information, immediate emotions, risks, benefits, creative possibilities, and overall synthesis. This helps the team examine the same question from multiple perspectives without allowing one type of thinking to dominate.

SCAMPER develops an existing product or concept through seven prompts: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse. It is especially useful when the goal is to create variations or identify new applications for an existing idea.

5 Whys moves from a surface-level problem toward its underlying cause by asking a sequence of connected 'why' questions. Each answer becomes the basis for the next question, helping the team identify the deeper consumer motivation or structural issue.

Fishbone Analysis organizes potential causes of a problem into a cause-and-effect structure. Feedback can be grouped into categories such as Product or Material, Process or Workflow, Environment, and People.

Round Robin structures the session as a sequential ideation relay. Each AI Twin builds on, refines, or challenges the previous contribution, helping prevent one perspective from dominating the final concept.

Consumer Co-Creation

Consumer Co-Creation is designed for teams that already have a seed concept and want the audience to help develop it. Instead of asking AI Twins only to react, the format brings them into the iteration process.

The study runs with 3-6 AI Twins over approximately 10-15 minutes. The seed concept is refined across one or more rounds, with each iteration assessed on measures such as feasibility, appeal, and alignment with the original problem.

The output is a more developed concept that can move into prototyping or quantitative validation, together with the audience rationale behind the recommended changes.

Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning is intended for high-level business questions rather than a single product or creative decision. It can be used to explore market entry, brand repositioning, pricing stance, channel focus, or another strategic move.

The format runs with 3-6 AI Twins over approximately 15-20 minutes. It returns a strategic recommendation, the consumer-grounded rationale behind that recommendation, and a risk assessment that identifies the most likely failure points.

How to Choose the Right Format

Use Brainstorming Sessions when you need to generate, expand, or reorganize ideas.

Use Consumer Co-Creation when you already have a concept and want the audience to help develop it.

Use Strategic Planning when the decision concerns market direction, positioning, pricing, channels, or another high-level strategic move.

Why Innovation Research Matters

Innovation work often happens inside the company. Stakeholders ideate, strategy decks are written, and product specifications are drafted before the intended audience has a meaningful opportunity to shape the decision.

This creates a common risk: an idea can feel compelling internally and still fail to connect once it reaches the market. Innovation Research introduces the audience before the budget is committed, while the concept or strategy is still flexible enough to change.

AI Twins can help generate ideas, develop a concept, or evaluate a strategic direction within a single working session. This makes audience involvement practical at the brief stage instead of reserving it for the end of a long innovation cycle.

How Innovation Research Respondents Work

Innovation Research uses full AI Twins rather than mini-twin survey respondents. Depending on the selected format, a study runs with 2-6 AI Twins.

The selected cohort shapes what the platform can generate. A Brainstorming Session with function-led AI Twins may produce different ideas from the same session run with lifestyle-led Twins. A Strategic Planning study with loyal customers may surface different opportunities and risks than one run with lapsed customers.

AI Twin selection should therefore be treated as part of the research design. Choose participants that closely reflect the audience the concept or strategy is intended to serve.

What an Innovation Research Study Produces

Each Innovation Research format produces a different type of output, but the central purpose remains the same: provide consumer-grounded direction on something that does not yet exist. Brainstorming Sessions return structured ideation, idea clusters, prioritized concepts, and a synthesis of the strongest direction. Consumer Co-Creation returns a refined concept developed through audience iteration, together with validation measures and the reasoning behind each change. Strategic Planning returns a recommended direction, a consumer-grounded rationale, and a risk assessment. Across all three formats, the output is designed to help the team decide what to create, how to improve it, or which strategic path deserves further investment.

What Innovation Research Will Not Tell You

Innovation Research is generative and directional. It does not show whether the final concept will sell at scale or what percentage of the market will support the recommendation.

It also does not replace financial modeling. Strategic Planning can surface audience assumptions, perceived value, and likely risks, but commercial viability must still be assessed through financial and operational analysis.

Use Innovation Research to generate, refine, and pressure-test the idea. Once the concept or strategy is sufficiently developed, use Quant research to measure how broadly the response is likely to hold.

How consumr.ai's Innovation Research Differs

The Standard Approach and Its Limits

Conventional innovation research often relies on facilitated workshops, co-creation panels, design-thinking sprints, or custom strategy engagements. The underlying methodologies are established, but the operational process can take weeks to recruit, schedule, field, and analyze.

Because of the cost and time required, these formats are usually reserved for the largest innovation decisions. Smaller product, positioning, and strategic questions are often handled internally without direct audience participation.

Workshop settings can also introduce self-presentation and group-conformity effects. Participants know they are being observed and may soften criticism, agree with the group, or favor ideas that sound impressive rather than those they would realistically use.

consumr.ai's Approach

Innovation Research on consumr.ai uses AI Twins informed by observed digital behavior rather than recruited workshop participants. The study can begin without participant scheduling or fieldwork delays.

The platform applies structured ideation, concept-development, and strategic frameworks within sessions that run in approximately 10-20 minutes. This makes consumer-grounded innovation research practical at the stage when an idea is still being formed.

The goal is not to replace every form of conventional innovation research. It is to make audience input available earlier and more frequently, so teams can identify better directions and obvious risks before committing larger resources.

Limitations

Innovation Research is designed to shape early-stage decisions, but its outputs should be treated as consumer-grounded direction rather than final validation.

Generative, not validating: The study produces and develops ideas, but it does not validate them at the population level.

AI Twin selection drives the output:Different cohorts may generate different ideas, refine the same concept differently, or favor different strategic directions.

Framework fit matters:The selected brainstorming method shapes the type of output. SCAMPER works well for existing-product variation, Six Thinking Hats for multi-perspective evaluation, and 5 Whys for root-cause exploration.

Strategic recommendations are not financial forecasts: Commercial modeling and operational assessment must happen alongside the audience analysis.

The output still requires judgment: Prioritized concepts and strategic directions should be reviewed against brand, technical, legal, and business constraints before implementation.

From an Early Idea to a Stronger Direction

Innovation Research helps teams involve the audience before a concept becomes expensive to change. It creates a structured path from an open question to new ideas, from a seed concept to a more developed proposition, or from a strategic uncertainty to a clearer recommendation.

The strongest studies begin with a clearly defined decision and a carefully selected AI Twin cohort. When those inputs are deliberate, Innovation Research can help the team move forward with a direction that is more relevant, better developed, and more aware of its potential risks.
