A3. Quick Focus Group

A complete guide to understanding and running a Quick Focus Group on consumr.ai

What Is a Quick Focus Group?

Quick Focus Group is one of three formats within consumr.ai's Focus Groups study family. To access it, go to Qual → Focus Groups → Quick.

The format uses the same role-and-objective foundation as Custom Focus Groups but removes the separate question-review stage and reduces the cohort size. The platform builds the discussion from the objective and completes the study in approximately 3-5 minutes.

Quick trades depth and output volume for speed. Standard is designed for templated studies with a broad visualization set. Custom is designed for deeper bespoke analysis with editable questions and citation traces. Quick is designed for the smaller decisions where a fast, grounded read is more useful than a comprehensive report.

Who Needs a Quick Focus Group?

Quick Focus Groups are designed for brand teams, product managers, researchers, and strategists who need a directional qualitative read without the time or output volume of a longer study.

This is the right format for in-flight decisions: checking a campaign thought before a meeting, pressure-testing a feature idea before the next sprint, understanding an immediate audience reaction, or adding a consumer perspective to a decision that would otherwise be made through internal opinion alone.

Choose Quick when the research question can be expressed as one clear objective, the audience can be represented by a focused cohort of 2-5 AI Twins, and a concise conclusion plus original audience responses is enough to move the decision forward.

Why Quick Focus Groups Matter

Qualitative research is often reserved for major projects because conventional studies require recruitment, moderation, and analysis. As a result, many everyday marketing and product decisions are made without an audience perspective.

Quick Focus Groups bring qualitative insight into those day-to-day decisions. A team can test the reasoning behind an idea while the question is still active, rather than waiting for a formal study or proceeding entirely on instinct.

The purpose is not to replace a larger Focus Group. It is to make a useful directional read available for decisions that would otherwise receive no qualitative research at all.

How Quick Focus Group Respondents Work

Participants in a Quick Focus Group are full AI Twins, not mini-twin survey respondents or recruited panelists. Each Twin responds using its broader behavioral context and provides a conversational perspective on the objective.

Quick supports 2-5 AI Twins. Because the cohort is deliberately small, every participant contributes a meaningful share of the conclusion. Twin selection should therefore be handled carefully.

Choose Twins that closely match the audience the question is intended to understand. An irrelevant participant can distort a small-cohort read more noticeably than it would in a larger study. A focused, relevant cohort is more valuable than broad variety for its own sake.

What a Quick Focus Group Produces

A Quick Focus Group produces the leanest report within the Focus Groups family. The results begin with a concise Conclusion that states the headline answer to the objective in plain language. A See detailed analysis option expands that answer into a short interpretation that connects the conclusion to the selected AI Twins and explains the reasoning behind it. The Response by Individuals section then shows each Twin's complete response as a continuous, verbatim block of text, preserving the original audience voice behind the synthesis. A full transcript can also be downloaded from the results page.

What a Quick Focus Group Will Not Tell You

Quick does not return the structured visualization set available in Standard. It does not include Word Clouds, Affinity Diagrams, Empathy Maps, SWOT panels, Customer Journey Maps, or A Day in the Life views.

It also does not provide the question-by-question breakdown, strategic recommendations, or citation-trace structure available in Custom. Quick is designed to answer a focused question quickly, not to produce a complete qualitative evidence package.

The findings are directional rather than statistically representative. When the decision requires broader confidence, a longer qualitative study, or population-level sizing, use Standard, Custom, or Quant research.

Quick's Unique Inputs

Quick keeps the setup intentionally narrow. The study is shaped through three inputs:

Discussion Role:Defines the moderator lens used to interpret and pursue the objective.

Probing Style:Interview uses follow-up questions to explore the response; Reflection captures a more immediate, less-directed first read.

Objective: A single open-text statement that defines what the study should uncover. The platform can provide suggested starters, or the objective can be written from scratch.

Quick does not include a question-editing step. The discussion is generated from the objective and begins after the AI Twins are selected. If the generated direction does not fit the brief, refine the objective or move to Custom for direct control over the question set.

How Quick Focus Groups Differ

The Standard Approach and Its Limits

Conventional qualitative research is generally designed around a full project: a detailed discussion guide, recruited participants, a moderated session, transcription, and analysis. This approach can provide substantial depth, but it is often too slow and expensive for a single in-flight decision.

The practical alternative is frequently no qualitative research at all. Teams debate the decision internally, use the information already available, and proceed without a direct audience read.

consumr.ai's Approach

Quick Focus Groups use AI Twins that have already been built for the target audience. The user defines the analytical role, probing style, and objective; selects a focused cohort; and receives a conclusion and original responses within minutes.

This makes qualitative research usable at the level of everyday decisions. The comparison that matters is not only Quick versus a full research project. It is Quick versus the audience perspective that would otherwise be absent.

Limitations

Quick Focus Groups are most useful when their boundaries are understood.

Tight cohort, narrow read: A cohort of 2-5 AI Twins supports a directional answer, not confidence about how broadly the conclusion generalizes.

No question editing: The platform builds the discussion from the objective. Rewrite the objective or use Custom when direct control over the questions is required.

No visualization output: Use Standard when the deliverable needs visual frameworks such as Word Clouds, Empathy Maps, or Customer Journeys.

Limited analytical depth: The detailed analysis is a concise interpretation rather than the multi-theme analysis and strategic recommendation set available in Custom.

Twin selection has a larger effect: Every AI Twin represents a meaningful share of the small cohort, so participant relevance is critical.

Probing style changes the result: Reflection prioritizes candid first reads, while Interview produces more depth through follow-up. Choose the mode that matches the research need.

Not statistically representative: Use Quant research when the decision depends on incidence, prevalence, or market-level confidence.

How to Run a Quick Focus Group

Before beginning the study, reduce the research need to one clear objective and identify the AI Twins that most closely reflect the audience you want to understand. Quick Focus Groups work best when the question is focused enough to support a concise directional answer. The following walkthrough explains how to configure the study, launch it, and review the resulting conclusion and individual responses.

Walkthrough of How to Create a Quick Focus Group

Step 1: Open Quick Focus Groups

Sign in to consumr.ai. From the dashboard, open Calendar → New Event → New Research Study. Select Qual → Focus Groups.

The Focus Groups landing page displays Standard, Custom, and Quick. Quick is the rightmost option and is marked as the Dipstick format. The card lists the core setup: rapid directional research, 2-5 AI Twins, and an estimated run time of 3-5 minutes.

Figure 1 - Focus Groups landing page with Quick as the rightmost option.

Click Start Study under Quick.

Step 2: Choose the Discussion Role and Probing Style

The Role & Approach screen contains two inputs: Questioning Style and Probing Style. Questioning Style defines the moderator lens. Probing Style controls whether the discussion follows up on the AI Twins' initial responses.

Figure 2 - Role & Approach screen with the default discussion settings.

The default role is Insightful Marketer. Open the Questioning Style dropdown to choose a different perspective:

Insightful Marketer: A balanced moderator for general qualitative questions.

Behavioral Psychologist:Explores cognitive biases, emotions, and decision drivers.

Pattern Analyst:Looks for recurring relationships, contradictions, and outliers.

Design Strategist:Frames the discussion around empathy and problem-solving.

Innovation Engineer:Pushes the conversation toward unconventional ideas and possible solutions.

Use Create Custom Role when the available roles do not match the question. Describe the analytical perspective the moderator should use and the type of insight it should prioritize.

Figure 3 - Questioning Style dropdown showing the available moderator roles.

Choose Interview when the objective requires clarification and follow-up. Choose Reflection when the priority is the AI Twins' immediate, unmediated response. Reflection is useful for instinctive first reads; Interview is better when the answer needs to be developed beyond the surface.

Click Select Objective.

Step 3: Define the Objective

The Objective screen presents suggested objectives and a free-text field. Select a suggestion to populate the field or write the objective from scratch.

Figure 4 - Objective screen with suggested objectives and a free-text field.

The objective is the central input in a Quick Focus Group because the platform generates the discussion from this statement without a separate question-review stage. Write it precisely and focus it on one decision.

A useful objective identifies what needs to be understood, the audience or context, and the type of reasoning required. For example, 'Uncover the emotional triggers behind athletic footwear purchases' is more actionable than 'Learn about shoe buyers.'

Figure 5 - Selected objective populated in the objective field.

Click Select Twins.

Step 4: Select the AI Twins

The Select Twins screen includes a search field and a Recommend option. Quick Focus Groups support 2-5 participants.

Figure 6 - Selected AI Twin displayed on the participant screen.

Select the AI Twins that most closely represent the audience named or implied by the objective. Because the cohort is small, avoid adding participants simply to create variety. Each selected Twin should contribute a relevant perspective to the decision.

Choose Conduct Meeting Once for a one-time directional read. Choose Start Meeting and Schedule when the same objective needs to be repeated over time.

Step 5: Review the Conclusion

When the run is complete, the results page opens with the Conclusion section. This is a concise statement of the main finding, written to answer the objective directly.

Figure 7 - Conclusion section at the top of the Quick Focus Group report.

The conclusion is intentionally brief. It should identify the central motivation, tension, or audience reaction and explain why it matters to the decision. For a time-sensitive brief, this section may provide enough direction on its own.

Step 6: Open the Detailed Analysis

Select See detailed analysis to expand the conclusion into a short interpretation. The analysis identifies the responding AI Twins, connects their reasoning to the headline finding, and explains how the conclusion applies to the audience perspective they represent.

Figure 8 - Detailed analysis expanding the Quick Focus Group conclusion.

Unlike the multi-theme analysis in Custom, the Quick analysis is presented as one consolidated explanation. This is the central speed-for-depth trade-off of the format.

Step 7: Review Responses by Individuals

The Response by Individuals section shows the complete, verbatim response from each selected AI Twin. The response is presented as a continuous block rather than divided into question-by-question cards.

Figure 9 - Response by Individuals with the AI Twin's complete verbatim response.

Use this section when the original audience language is more valuable than the synthesis alone. The response can help teams identify realistic phrasing, concrete contexts, emotional contrasts, and desired outcomes for use in a brief, presentation, or creative discussion.

The conclusion explains the directional finding. Response by Individuals shows the language and reasoning that produced it.

Step 8: Download the Transcript

Download the full transcript when the complete discussion record is required for internal review or external sharing.

For most Quick decisions, lead with the conclusion and include the individual responses when stakeholders need additional context or direct audience language.

From a Fast Question to a Directional Answer

Quick Focus Group is designed to bring an audience perspective into decisions that cannot support a full qualitative study. It keeps the setup focused, the cohort tight, and the output easy to read.

The strongest Quick studies begin with a precise objective, an intentional moderator lens, and carefully selected AI Twins. When those inputs are clear, the study can turn a small research question into an actionable directional read within minutes.
